Browser based MFA
It is a good idea to have multiple methods to authenticate to University (Microsoft) services in case you lose, damage or forget your primary method, e.g. your mobile phone. This document describes how to use an extension in the Edge browser to get a one time passcode which you can use to login.
Instructions
Visit Authenticator Extension and click on the Add to Edge button (There are also versions for Chrome and Firefox available from the drop-down)
Go to My Sign-Ins | Security Info | Microsoft.com and choose Add sign-in method and select Authenticator app from the drop-down menu
Choose I want to use a different authenticator app
Click on Next and a window with a QR code will appear:
Open the Authenticator extention and click on the Scan icon:
Use the “cross-hairs” to draw a square over the QR code and you should see a success message:
Click OK and then Next
You will then see a window where you’re asked to enter the 6-digit code. Open the extension and you should see an entry for Microsoft with a 6-digit code with a countdown timer. Type the code and that should complete registration. You can now use this method to sign into your University Microsoft account either on the device the extension is installed on or on another device by choosing the authenticator app and typing in the number presented in the Authenticator browser extension in the prompt on the other device.
How to log in using this method:
If your default method is the MS Authenticator app, this will appear.
Use a verification code does not necessarily mean the code from the Microsoft app
Open your browser extension (Chrome shown as example, synced with @cam account)
Enter code and Verify.
