Onboard a new user with no previous University affiliation

Instructions for new-to-Cambridge user at PHY 

 

Task 1 - Activate ‘Raven’ 

  1. New user needs Jackdaw registration sheet 

  2. Existing member of staff to open a private browser, navigate to http://jackdaw.cam.ac.uk/signup and enter information requested. This should result in a temporary Raven password being generated – leave this tab open 

  3. Open a new tab and navigate to http://password.raven.cam.ac.uk and Log in using Raven 

  4. Enter CRSid and temporary password which should be generated in step 2. Do not be tempted to save the password in the browser as it will soon be changed

  5. Set up self-service password recovery with some memorable security questions (you can make up your own if you wish, it’s at the bottom of the dropdown menu). 

  6. Change your password to something more sensible. I recommend http://xkpasswd.net/s/ and select a portion including three words, separating characters and numbers at either end.

Task 2 - Activate Microsoft 

  1. Open a new tab in the private browser and navigate to http://office.com and sign in with your full abc123@cam.ac.uk and newly created secure password from 2.6 above. 

  2. A pop-up window will say something like ‘we need some more information’. Download Microsoft Authenticator on your phone from Apple/Play Store or whatever your equivalent1. Make sure it’s the Microsoft one the top result in iPhone Apple store is often an ad for a different app! 

  3. In Microsoft Authenticator, tap the + in the blue bar at the top of the page, select Work or School Account. Select Scan a QR code (not Sign in, you will end up in a frustrating loop!) 

  4. Follow the instructions on the PC, click Next a few times and you will get the QR code to point your phone at. 

  5. Continue following instructions until you get into Microsoft 365 (sometimes referred to as ‘Office-dot-com’), explore the online apps in the bar on the left side, and make sure you can access your email in Outlook. 

Task 3 - Log into your laptop 

  1. Hopefully by this time, your @cam account (in ‘Blue AD’) will have activated so that you can log into your laptop. 

  2. Connect the laptop to the internet before attempting to sign in. This may be with an Ethernet connection or, you can hotspot it to your phone if needs be. 

  3. Log in using CRSid and Raven password. If successful you should see Windows 11 loading. 

  4. When Windows has loaded, open Outlook and Teams, sign in with your full email address and Raven password, accepting all license agreements. 

  5. Open Edge and Sign in to sync data, this will get things running smoothly. 

Task 4  - Connect to Eduroam 

  1. In Edge navigate to http://tokens.uis.cam.ac.uk, create a token, use the number of your computer (on a sticker) without the hyphens (-) 

  2. Open a new tab and using Google search engine, search ‘UIS eduroam’ which should bring you to the UIS instructions for setting up Eduroam. 

  3. Once you have installed the Configuration Assistant Tool (CAT) using the credentials in the tokens tab in Task 4.1, go to your network settings in System Tray in the bottom right, select Eduroam and connect automatically.
